Hello, I'm going to Guatemala in May, and I would like to know how many days do you recommend to stay here in Santiago? I'm only going for 5 days. How may of this towns that you mention are worth visiting? did you hike any of the volcanos? Is the ferry expensive? Thanks Alejandra

Five days on the lake is a good amount of time. Panajachel is easily the biggest town. It has the most restaurants and shopping, but I enjoy staying in one of the smaller towns. The boats to and from the villages are very cheap. You can easily and cheaply visit all of them in the time you are there. The boat rides cost from 10 to 15 quetzales, depending on how far you go. San Marco and San Pedro are medium size villages, each with their own charm. We stayed in Santa Cruz, which is small but beautiful. Santiago is a town with more of a local infrastructure than any other on the lake other than Pana. We hiked from Santa Cruz to San Marco. Very nice hike. My friend hiked to the top of Pedro Volcano. It's about 1,500 meters of elevation gain. Nice view, but some huffing and puffing. A restaurant in Pana that doesn't look like much but which has excellent food is Deli llama del Fuego. If you like to shop, go to the Chichi market, about an hour away, two days a week. Have fun.
