The World Peace Bell has been at its current site in downtown Newport for nearly a quarter-century. Standing 12 feet tall and weighing 66,000 pounds, it is the world's largest free-swinging bell.

During a special meeting Friday, the Newport City Commission moved forward with plans to revitalize a city block bordered by Monmouth, York, Fourth and Fifth streets at the World Peace Bell site.
