The Squamish Nation, known as Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw in our language, traces its roots back to multiple physical communities, or úxwumixw, before becoming a government entity in 1923. Most of our community resides on the North Shore of Vancouver, with a smaller population living in Squamish along the Squamish River.

Our History - Squamish Nation
In 2023, we celebrated 100 years since sixteen Sḵwx̱wú7mesh villages amalgamated to become the modern Squamish Nation – or Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. However Sḵwx̱wú7mesh history and the connection to our territory span thousands of years, long before Amalgamation.

Reclaiming Education - Squamish Nation
Taking back jurisdiction of our children’s education is one of the Nation Building Initiatives that Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) prioritizes. Our s7ulh wa nexwniw̓éyalh (Our Ways of Education) project team is embarking on an exciting journey to reshape the future of education in our community, and we need your valuable input!
Council - Squamish Nation
Squamish Nation offices will be closed for the holidays starting on Friday, December 20, 2024 and they will re-open on Thursday, January 2, 2025. Regular programs and services may not be running, but there are still many supports available to Members in need.
Our Language - Squamish Nation
The Squamish People, who are the Indigenous Peoples that speak Sḵwx̱wú7mesh sníchim, are often referred to as the Squamish Nation today. However, in the long ago, there was no word for “nation,” so the people simply identified themselves as Sḵwx̱wú7mesh or “the Squamish People.”
