It changes the structure of the base metal and causes more warping. 6013 and 7018 are both low penetration, and 6010/6011 is deep penetrating. 6013 is a friendlier rod to use than 7018 and should do fine for most of your work on mild steel.

I bought a box of Lincoln 3/32 6013s the other day and was comparing the amperage range on the box to the amperage of the Hobart 3/32 6013s. The Lincolns are rated for 70-100 Amps, while the Hobarts are somewhere near 40Amps-80Amps (eyeballing the Hobarts off the Hobart chart).

Pre-dry unusually damp electrodes for 30 - 45 minutes at 200°F to 230°F (90 - 110°C) before final drying to minimize cracking of the coating.
