2022年1月29日 · We had an i8, had to get rid of it in the end due to things going wrong. Google i8 Compressor (aircon) This is very common on i8’s and is anything up to £16,000 to have repaired. You need it for keeping the batteries cool while charging. Luckily ours was under a BMW warranty but the bill to BMW came to £12,870 to have it repaired.

2023年5月28日 · In fact, the engine ALPINA used was actually the same 2.0 liter turbocharged four-pot that now powers the BMW M135i. Except it was tuned to make around 350 horsepower, rather than the M135i’s 302 horsepower. Throw in the electric motors and the ALPINA i8 was a far more potent machine than its BMW counterpart.

If I could afford an i8 I would buy it. It’s a gorgeous car. Yes it’s not fast, but I wouldn’t need it to be fast or a performance car since I have my E92 335i that I’m currently building for that.

2016年1月16日 · Getting in and out hasn't been a big deal. (I'm a short, slim guy, and young enough that I don't have any hip or back problems yet.) Power in Comfort mode can be inconsistent and surprising if you don't commit to the throttle from the get-go, since the gas engine can turn off at stop lights.

2022年10月27日 · The issue is that people with the affluence to spend $160k++ on a car simply do not consider BMW premium enough. This has been a thing for BMW for decades. Hence the i8, the XM, all kinds of cars designed to bring that kind of customer in. So far none have worked. This is why the AMG GT, for instance, does so much better.

Look at the B58 let alone S58 hell even the B48 in the I8 would be game-changing. The biggest problem with the I8 was at the time it cost supercar money but lacked the supercar performance. In Canada, an M3/4 will run you 115-120k M5 Comp & CS 140k-180k, so now the I8 would be outperformed unless they make a crazy fast EV and ditch the engine ...

It won't be as comfy but it seems like the closest match to what makes the i8 interesting. If the ev bits didn't make it interesting, a Porsche Boxter or F-Type convertible might scratch your itch. They have a very different feel, but capture some of what an i8 is good at. And don't buy a used i8. That sounds like a disaster.

You could potentially financially bury yourself with an i8… especially if you get a 2014-2016 with an expired battery warranty. If you ever have issues with the car, you can only bring it to a BMW dealership to have it fixed, and it will not be cheap. If the main battery ever needs to be replaced, that’s an easy $15-20k.

2021年1月12日 · Overall, the i8 is a fun car to drive. For the price, there are certainly better performing cars. Even in the BMW family, a convertible 440i or M4 would perform better and be significantly cheaper. The i8 leases in the $1k / month range making it cheaper than a Performance Tesla S (which is the best straight line performance in this price range).
