Hi, I want to know why I have brown algae in my clean tank. I cleaned it 1 and 1/2 weeks ago. I don't have enough time since I am so busy in school. I ask my brother to do it, but he's too busy too. My parents are all at work and my sleepover friend is too busy also. I might as well quit the aquarium thing when all my fish die.

The brown algae is caused due to the high levels of things like phosphate, nitrate etc. along with the excessive amount of light. A fish tank light really shouldn't be on for more than 10-12 hours otherwise algae will grow. You can get rid of the algae by turning off the light for a few weeks and scrubbing/siphoning away as much of it as possible.

If you are having algae troubles, generally that means that your tank is getting too much light or too many nutrients. Try limiting the time that your light is on to 6 to 8 hours, and feeding only what your fish can completely consume in a couple of minutes. Also consider adding some live plants, as they can outcompete the algae for nutrients.

Brown Algae is harmless to fish but can cause your tank to look unsightly. When you perform weekly tank maintenance, wipe all surfaces to remove Algae. Check the walls, filter, heater, lights and substrate. Do not leave the tank lights on all day unless the tank is planted with live plants and requires a lot of light.

As i and others have said , snails are not an option. And there really are no other algae eaters that would be safe to house with a goldfish. Treating the root cause of the algae is the best option along with manual removal. Dont clean all decorations at once though. Those also house beneficial bacteria as well.

The brown algae shouldn't take over. Your hand and a sponge would be the best thing to remove the algae, but if you're looking for something else to remove it for you, nerite snails would do a good job. If you really want to get some otos, just make sure you're prepared to feed them.

Okay daughter wanted a fish tank and I went to walmart and bought the 10 gallon starter aquarium. We bought it home and set it up. Let it run. Two days later we went back to walmart and bought 6 guppies. Her dad went to petsmart and bought 4 ghost or glass shrimp and one Otocinclus Catfish (yeah the sales person said he needed one).
