2018年7月31日 · Posted August 6, 2018. In industrial plating, copper is usually the base coat because it will 'stick' to anything. Not many metals will plate to steel, but copper will. Similarly, most things will plate on to copper, so it is very common to do a copper strike coat on steel before moving on to other materials.

Dissolve a bunch of copper in ferric, dip a blade an bam! Instant copper plating. For stainless you'd probably have to do a crude electroplate job.

This can lead to cracking and will prevent forge welding. Finally, Doug hit it on the head: most of this stuff, if not all, will be no more than 0.45% carbon at most.

2023年4月11日 · The colours were probably from oxidation of the steel, and were probably unintended, maybe impurities in the metal. However, the surface treatment does really affect how patinas develop, and I suspect that the Celts/Goths used stones/finger stones to sharpen and polish their blades, or maybe stone or clay powder like the Japanese polish urushi.

2017年7月22日 · The green was probably either copper or zinc. Chrome plated steel is first plated with copper because it's so conductive, then nickel because chrome doesn't stick to copper as well, then finally chrome. As for the zinc, well, some cheap tools aren't chrome plated, but rather are galvanized. Good reasons not to forge plated items!

2023年9月23日 · Pewter isn't quite as strong as copper alloys in that respect, but it's still the more resistant metal. The only bimetallic combos in which the steel will not be eaten first are steel/magnesium and steel/zinc. That's why you see zinc used to prevent corrosion on steel-hulled ships. The zinc will slowly dissolve, leaving the steel untouched.
