The History of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
That event of 1925 is honored by a different sled dog race, the Serum Run, a race Joe helped establish. Joe’s perseverance and ability to work with people and get them to volunteer resulted in the first race of 1973, won by Dick Wilmarth in 20 days, 0 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds.
Iditarod Race History
The Winter Olympics at one time was considering adding sled dog racing as an event and several sled dog races were held in Norway in conjunction with the 1994 games. Although the race’s fame causes many people to think of the Iditarod Trail when they think of traveling to Nome, the trail is actually impassable during the spring, summer, and fall.

Doug Swingley, 1995 Champion, completed the course in 9 days, 2 hours, 42 minutes and 19 seconds to become the first musher from outside of the state of Alaska to ever win the Iditarod. Since that time, records have been broken and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has continued to celebrate the importance of the dogs of the Iditarod.
2025 Information for Mushers - Iditarod
The object of the race is to determine which musher and dogs can cover the race in the shortest time under their own power and without the aid of others. That is determined by the nose of the first dog to cross the finish line. To that end, the Iditarod Trail Committee has established these rules and policies to govern the race.

The Beginning - Iditarod
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race first ran to Nome in 1973, after two short races on part of the Iditarod Trail in 1967 and 1969. The idea of having a race over the Iditarod Trail was conceived by the late Dorothy G. Page.
