Here's where it gets sticky. Also in 1938, Piper introduced a side-by-side model, the J-4 Cub Coupe, and in 1940 it came out with the J-5 Cub Cruiser, both of them with upright doors instead of a window that hinged up and a half-door that hinged down. Were they also Cubs?

The postwar PA-11 Cub Special was the first Cub to be sold with a Continental C90-8 engine. Thus equipped, it had a max speed of 112 mph, cruise 100 mph, sea level climb 900 fpm, range with reserve 350 miles, and service ceiling 16,000 feet. American Legend Cub: a J-3 lookalike for the 21st century
2005年3月10日 · The Legend Cub made its first flight on March 10, 2005. Now called the AL3 Classic Cub, it's a bit wider than the Piper aircraft of the 1930s. With a 100-hp engine and fuel tank in the wing, it also incorporates the refinements of the postwar PA-11 Cub Special. The bungee cords of old have been replaced by coil springs.

As a member of the company's Cub Club, she could rent a J-3 for $2 an hour. "The instructor was another fifty cents or so, depending on who I had," she says. That would be a bit more thant $5 today. One of Leah's great memories is the night they worked overtime so as to turn out 35 Piper Cubs in one day, a plant record.
