Ed - From my own experience I can say that it does. A number of years back I had a very bad case of the flu and was out for several days. Even though I was feeling better when I came back my spirometry results were over 10% down (I was doing weekly QC on myself) and it took a couple weeks before they got back to my normal values.
Altitude - PFTBlog
Recently I was trying to explain the effect of altitude on blood oxygenation to somebody with IPF. They had observed that their oxygen saturation was fairly normal at sea level but that they needed to use their supplemental O2 when they went up to 2000 feet and didn’t understand why such a low altitude made that much of a difference.

The mechanical aspects of the lung, which do of course have a bearing on gas exchange, can be assessed by spirometry and lung volume tests but for a complete assessment of an individual’s lung function a diffusing capacity test (DLCO) must be performed as well.
