The Nacreous or calico scale group is a heterozygous genetic anomaly. A nacreous fish is a blend of metallic solid scale to a matte transparent non reflective. The mottled scaling and usual coloring of such a fish resembles the old calico patterns and in most cases the fish are called calico.

The Mock Metallic is the blue belly fish of the nacreous group. Like the metallic in a nacreous spawn the mock usually does not carry the demelanizing gene and produces different results when bred to other variants than a bluebelly would. The mock has almost no transparent scales an almost solid look and non visible blue abdomen.

Pseudomattes are nacreous fish with the mock metallic gene instead of a nacreous metallic,gene, Again when crossing a mock to a nacreous fish in the F1 you get normal looking nacreous fish with normal looking metallic’s. When siblings are crossed you then get pseudomatte fish and asorted metallic’s, 50% mock and 50% metallic.

This year I have bred 4 males (2010) with 2 females (2009 and 2010). In previous years I have aimed for a larger spawning using 3 or 4 females producing many thousands of fry, but as I am trying to spawn Ranchu and I have had a spawning of 2011 Nacreous Fantails, I am looking for something smaller in 2012. All three photos are of fish bred in 2010.

The pinkies are visible quite early on and I hate removing them because they are so pink! I always keep a few of them. I leave the removal of the metallics a little longer because finding the mock metallics is easier when they are slightly bigger. I do separate the metallics and nacreous as soon as they can be identified. A matt / pinkie
