It is commonly used as a model for lung cancer research due to its characteristics, including its ability to grow in culture, its responsiveness to various stimuli, and its similarity to lung cancer cells found in patients.
Human A549 cells were isolated from a patient with a lung carcinoma. A549 cells harvested from tissue culture flasks are implanted into the subcutaneous space of the left flank of the mice. Resulting tumors are monitored by calipering twice weekly. Animal weights are measured three times weekly. Animal behaviour is monitored daily.
