Feb 13, 2020 · Both are a 56% silver brazing rod, but the Safety-Silv is much smaller diameter than the SSF-6 I see on Amazon. It will not break. In fact, it will outlast the brass. It has a slight brassy color, and matches well when fresh, but when the brass eventually tarnishes the braze line will stand out like a sore thumb.

Sep 10, 2008 · The brazing rod contains zinc and the zinc will boil off and raise the melting point of the brass, making it harder to braze the part. Instead heat the parts in the forge and when they are hot enough, pull them out and touch the brazing rod to the joint. The brass should melt and get sucked into the joint by capillary action.

Aug 13, 2022 · Now you go by the alloy number, and pay no attention to the actual name. Jeweler's bronze is actually plain copper/zinc brass, naval forging brass is actually copper/tin bronze, and so on. Brazing rod is technically a bronze, but may be brass as well. If you want a really strong joint use a pre-1981 U.S. penny. Or a brass-looking key.

Jan 6, 2017 · Funny you should mention this, I just got my butt kicked by a scabbard chape. I spent I bet 8 hrs on making this stupid thing, trashed a whole sheet of brass. I made a wood copy of the scabbard to form it on and did a small folded seam. (used all my oxgyn trying to braze up 3 flops) Im making the mouth of tooled leather.

Aug 26, 2023 · For cold-forming the brass, I usually forge it around a steel mandrel and make the parts in halves, then braze the seams. The late Alex Daniels made a neat-o press to do this. He'd grind out a steel mandrel the exact size of the sheath tip and throat, make a paper pattern that would fit perfectly halfway up the sides of the mandrels.

Apr 11, 2024 · Some more of my Things Made This Month...a stacked leather/brass/micarta single-edge dagger a la scian-dubh and sheath, French-style sabatier in 80crv2 and patnered meat cleaver in 1084 with cocobolo, brass corby's and dovetailed bolsters with (respectively) cherry and walnut scabbards, and an ebony and copper hunter from 80crv2 with the best hamon I've accomplished yet.
