The transaxle in a Smart has a lower (numerically higher) drive ratio to make up for its obvious lack of power, to enable it to get away from an intersection without being run over by a Kenworth (this isn't a slam on the car itself; most small cars with economy-minded engines are put together this way).

It drives up to 160 km/h, which is faster than allowed in most countries. If I drive sensible on a highway it needs 4.1 L of gazoline in the city like 5.6 to 5.8 L. Parking a Smart Car is a nice add on.
