Once a socket has been created (identifying the other host and port), writes to that socket are turned into network packets that get sent out, and data received from the network can be read from the socket. Sockets are similar to pipes. Both look like files to the programs using them.

(The BSD C library's syslog() function nowadays uses /var/run/log as the socket name, and tries /var/run/logpriv first.) Applications can of course have their own code to do this directly.

Beware though that sockets are only reachable from programs that are running on the same server (there's no network support, obviously) and that the programs need to have the necessary permissions to access the socket file.

2011年4月1日 · My assumption is that netcat must somehow block on stdin (maybe it's trying to read it for some reason) before actually doing any Socket operations. As such, without the printf statement writing to fifo a, the netcat command will never start listening on port 8001. Note: I would have left an answer on Mark's post, but I don't have reputation yet.
