Somitomere - Wikipedia
In the developing vertebrate embryo, the somitomeres (or somatomeres) [1] are collections of cells that are derived from the loose masses of paraxial mesoderm that are found alongside the developing neural tube. In human embryogenesis they appear towards the end of the third gestational week.

Somite formation begins as paraxial mesoderm cells become organized into whorls of cells called somitomeres. The somitomeres become compacted and bound together by an epithelium, and eventually separate from the presomitic paraxial mesoderm to form individual somites.

When newly formed, somitomeres are patterned arrays of mesenchymal cells, arranged into squat, bilaminar discs. The dorsal and ventral faces of these discs are composed of concentric rings of cells. Somites are easily seen as segmental units by light microscopy, or even with the naked eye. However, when viewed with stereo scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the paraxial mesoderm that has not yet formed into somites is seen to be segmented as patterned arrays of looser mesenchyme cells.
