A lot of people enjoy working with a walking plow behind their team of horses. The feel of the earth being sliced and turned over with roots popping resonates through the plow frame to the wood handles. Problem is, to plow a long field, the teamster must do a lot of walking. That's one of the reasons many prefer to ride a sulky plow instead. Paul Vanderlaan of Cleburne, Mich., has found a way to work with a walking plow but not have to take all the steps. One of the nice things about plow days is it brings together a bunch of people, their horses, and enthusiasm to try new things. At the Joel Baldwin plow day in Ashtabula, Ohio, earlier this year, A couple of teamsters put together a six-horse (three and three) hitch on a two bottom gang plow using a rope and pulley system. It was a first for the horses and the teamsters. And, despite the rain, it went pretty well. | Rural Heritage Magazine
