The USS ALABAMA is known mostly for her service in the Pacific during WWII. However, when the U.S. entered the war in December 1941, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill requested support from American 16” armed fast battleships. This led to the USS ALABAMA and USS SOUTH DAKOTA joining the British Home Fleet where they planned to draw out German battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst. However, the Germans never sortied.
